Yoga in Harmony with Horses  Retreat Our "Yoga in Harmony with Horses" Retreats show you ways to develop your consciousness to create positive changes in your life. Whether you are a novice or expert in Yoga and riding, you can achieve richer communication and trust with your horse through meditation, visualization, asanas and pranayama. The rhythmic poses and yoga breathing exercises help you learn how to breathe in rhythm with movement as well as enhance your awareness.

A sampling of the activites you'll enjoy on this Retreat: awesome food and lodging at the Magellan Inn in Cahuita; Yoga and meditation with Corinne Aulakh (a RYT 200® Yoga Instructor & Therapist); snorkling the coral reefs and a guided hike in National Park of Cahuita; horse treks through the jungle and along the beach; and peace and serenity.

What is Yoga Therapy?

Group classes for all levels

Saturday, 8:30am to 10am at my hillside studio

Join the on-going group classes or contact me for private yoga sessions, which can be tailored to include Traditional Ashtanga and Shivanada sequences, restorative yoga sequences, and Power yoga sequences.

Classes are free but donations are very welcome. Traditionally, students each donate 3000 colones for group classes and 10,000 colones for private sessions.

A yoga practice guides us to self-awareness.

The practice of yoga asanas, or postures, strengthens and tones muscles and connective tissues like ligaments and tendons.

Gentle stretching aids in releasing lactic acid that builds up in your muscles, relieving fatigue and pain.

As I say frequently in my classes, "Yoga is not about touching your toes."

Yoga is your personal journey to re-discover you. My approach to asana and pranayama practice is to offer adaptations and adjustments to each movement to allow students to enjoy and learn from each action. For example, for years I could not put any weight on my hands and wrists. My adaptation to the Downward Facing Dog and plank in Sun Salutations was to do the Dolphin and the Dolphin plank. Mountain pose can be done from a chair. Balance poses can be done with supports. Try an asana practice in the pool to help with balance and flexibility.

I want to share my yoga journey with those who may not easily find their niche in the modern yoga world of contortionists, brands, fads, and even competitions. I am 54 years old and I have rheumatoid arthritis. The arthritis is just a part of my yoga journey that has taught me many valuable lessons about perseverance, balance, stillness, calm determination, acceptance and most of all faith.

Yoga is universal and for everyone, regardless of any so-called physical, mental, or emotional limitations. The practice of yoga allows us to directly experience the divine in ourselves and all around us. When we become aware of the oneness of all life we begin our true human experience.

I am certified in the Ashtanga and Hatha yoga styles. I also have experience with the Shivananda style of yoga, the 26 sequences of postures used in Bikram's style of yoga and restorative yoga in addition to therapeutic yoga practices.

Why Yoga and Horses?


We use the same skill sets when we enter, hold, and leave a yoga asana that we use when we interact with our equine companions. We enter an asana with calm determination, hold the pose with grace and quiet breath, and leave the pose with awareness and thankfulness.

The same is true when we ask our horses to perform up and down transitions. When we ask with calm firmness they respond willingly and happily.

Horses are noble creatures capable of great physical feats and they generously share that with us if we are open to accepting their gifts. We need only quiet the "noise" in our minds and listen.

A yoga practice prepares us to find that quiet place within each of us and listen for our horses’ invitation to come play.

    Downward facing dog at 2 months and 4 months after having my right hip replaced. Had trouble at 2 months fully extending the right leg and tilting the hips up. At 4 months, I can finally extend my leg and fully tilt the hips up although I am still having some discomfort in the gluts. Yay!
